Chapter 33 sure doe put it all into perspective. God has brought them a long way since Egypt. They now stand at the gateway to the Promised Land. For 40 years it has been the next item on the agenda and now they are there. You can almost feel their excitement and anticipation as they dream about what life will be like. I don’t mean to mess up the story for you, but it’s not going to go much better than it has been. Same story, different location. The land didn’t do it. These people have a heart issue.
I find it interesting that even today this land that was give by God to the Israelite people is still under contention. If the people were going to fully occupy the land, they would need to follow God. Today they have not taken possession of their whole property and the holiest spot for all of Israel is occupied by their strongest enemy (Dome of the Rock). I wonder what it will take to follow God?

I had a hard time getting past 31:54 this morning: "So Moses adn Eleazar the priest accepted the gifts from teh generals adn captains and brought the gold to teh Tabernacle as a REMINDER TO THE LORD THAT THE PEOPLE OF ISRAEL BELONG TO HIM." (sorry for the caps - I couldn't find another way for emphasis). Why would the Lord need a reminder of who belonged to Him? Was it more for the Isrealite's sake or like when Moses pled for the people.
ReplyDeleteYou're right though - they, and we, are still a stubborn people! Whatever we get from Him, it never seems to be enough to hold our attention for long before we're off in another direction again (well, I can only speak for myself). Why are we -- no, I'll make that more personal -- Why am I do stubborn when God promises so much more for my life if I will give it ALL to Him?
Okay..I'm a little behind on the reading, but just found this blog and I just finished reading this part of the bible. I agree w/ this comment and would just like to say I think it was Moses plea for the people. However, I think it might have been better if the people pleaed for themselves. But, I understand that isn't how it all worked back then in the Old testament.
