Day 3 (Tuesday) - Genesis 8:1-11:9

Sorry about this video but I just couldn't resist!

I know, I know, it's another great example of Christianity totally embarrassing itself. I have to laugh at this stuff. You can find this one on You Tube as well. Hope it put a little smile on your face. You'll probably find yourself singing it as well...sorry about that!

On with the text for today...

According to the text, the pre-flood diet might have been a vegetarian diet for it is not until after the flood that God gives humanity the animals to eat. I think I’ll celebrate tonight with a big juicy steak!

Did you notice that it was just over a full year that Noah and his family stayed in that boat! I’ve never really understood why Noah did that whole drinking/naked thing. Obviously a test for the kids, but it is weird. Also, for those that say biblical wine was so diluted that it didn’t get people drunk…Noah has something to say about that!

Another genealogy…these sections are tough.

God seems to be saying from the tower of Babel story that we would have advanced much quicker if we could talk the same language. I wonder what life would be like today if we all spoke the same language.

It looks like we get to start tomorrow with another…you guessed it…genealogy!

  2. Yeah that video is not helpful!

The tower of babel story is always interesting to me. I know some say it's the literal proof of how we got the different languages, but the overriding theme seems to be more the idea of not trying to become God (that was Eve and Adam's original deal as well). If we take this story literally at face value, then we too have to believe that God really was worried about humanity being able to do anything (11:6).

  3. I am always confused about the amount of years that people lived. How do the numbers translate?

  4. Earlier in human history it seems that people lived longer. It seems like Adam and Eve were not created to die but the decision to not follow God’s plan set them on a course for death. In God’s pre-fall creation there were no diseases, but afterwards all of creation started to break down. People continued to live long lives (900+ years) but it slowly shrank. In fact in human history it got as short as 40 years. As we control disease, we have been able to increase it and doctors believe that 250 is not that far out of reach in the next century. So the lengths we live seem to have more to do with our environment than anything else. Hope this helps!
